How to Use a Chillum: A Guide for the Classy Stoner

If you're a classy stoner who enjoys smoking cannabis, then you might’ve heard of chillums. These small, straight pipes are perfect for solo smoking sessions and are a great addition to any cannabis collection. Although chillums aren’t as popular as a hand pipe or water pipe, they definitely have their time and place to be used.

If you're new to smoking chillums, you may be wondering how to use them. They are one of the simplest smoking devices out there, yet plenty of people have trouble using a chillum properly. We'll explain everything you need to know about chillums, including what they are, how to pack them, and how to smoke them.

What is a Chillum?

A chillum is a straight pipe that is usually made from clay, stone, metal, or glass. They are typically smaller than traditional pipes and don't have a carb, which means they require a different smoking technique. For those of you who don’t know, a carb is the hole you place your finger on in a hand pipe that helps to control the smoke volume. Chillums have been used for centuries by Hindu monks and are still popular in India and Nepal today. In recent years, chillums have become popular among cannabis enthusiasts in the West, thanks to their simplicity and convenience. Most chillums are typically cone shaped and not much bigger than a finger. However, there are some super large chillums that require two people to function well.

How to Pack a Chillum:

Packing a chillum is different from packing other types of pipes. First, grind your cannabis to a fine consistency. Then, using a small tool or your fingers, gently pack the cannabis into the open end of the chillum. Be careful not to overpack it, as this can make it difficult to smoke due to the chillum not having a carb. Once your chillum is packed, it's ready to smoke.

How to Smoke a Chillum:

Smoking a chillum requires a slightly different technique than smoking a traditional pipe. First, light your cannabis with a lighter or hemp wick. Then, place your lips around the mouthpiece and inhale gently.  Unlike traditional pipes, chillums don't have a carb, so you need to cover the end to create suction. Take small hits, as chillum hits tend to be much harsher then a bong or hand pipe hit.

Chillums vs Hand Pipes

Although chillums and hand pipes are both very portable, the two are actually quite different in how they function. Chillums are typically straight shooters, with very little filtration and control over smoke volume. Hand pipes contain a carb, which is that small hole near the bowl that you keep your finger on to control the smoke volume. This carb allows you to hit the hand pipe multiple times if you desire. A chillum is really only meant to be hit once, then repacked and hit again. There is no way to control the smoke volume with a chillum. Hand pipes may also contain ways to filter and purify your smoke. For example, the Path Pipe has a filtration and cooling pathway to make your hit smoother.

Chillum FAQs:

Can I use a chillum for concentrates?

Chillums are designed for smoking dry herb and are not recommended for concentrates. If you're looking to smoke concentrates, consider investing in a dab rig or a vaporizer. Make sure to invest in a weed grinder if you have a chillum.

Can I clean my chillum with alcohol?

Yes, you can clean your chillum with rubbing alcohol. Simply soak the chillum in isopropyl alcohol for 30 minutes, then rinse it with hot water and let it dry. If there’s a ton of resin, try using alcohol and coarse salt. You can also use a pipe cleaner to remove any leftover resin.

What is the difference between a chillum and a one-hitter?

While both chillums and one-hitters are small, straight pipes, they are designed differently. Chillums are usually wider and have a larger bowl, while one-hitters are thinner and have a smaller bowl. Chillums and one hitters are typically straight shooters without a carb so both have very little filtration.
